Apple has officially released iOS 26.5, a mid-cycle update focused on privacy, customization, and broader ecosystem compatibility. Rolling out in May 2026, the update introduces several notable features, including end-to-end encrypted RCS messaging in beta, new personalization options, and smarter recommendations inside Apple Maps. The release also expands support for third-party accessories and introduces more flexible subion tools for developers.
One of the biggest additions in iOS 26.5 is encrypted RCS messaging for conversations between iPhone and Android users. Apple’s Messages app now supports end-to-end encryption for RCS chats in beta, adding a lock icon to indicate secure conversations. The move significantly improves privacy for cross-platform messaging and marks a major step toward bringing iPhone-to-Android communication closer to the security standards of iMessage.
The update also adds a new Pride Luminance wallpaper, continuing Apple’s annual tradition of Pride-themed customization options. The wallpaper features colorful light-refraction effects that dynamically shift depending on movement and lighting, giving iPhones a more vibrant and animated appearance.
Apple Maps is receiving a smarter recommendation system through a new “Suggested Places” feature. The app can now surface curated locations based on trending destinations, recent searches, and user activity patterns, making it easier to discover restaurants, shops, and attractions directly within Maps.
In the European Union, iOS 26.5 further expands integration support for third-party wearables and accessories. Smartwatches and earbuds from other brands can now access deeper system-level features, including improved notification controls and faster proximity-based pairing similar to the AirPods experience. The change is part of Apple’s ongoing compliance with EU digital market regulations.
Developers are also gaining new monetization flexibility with updated subion options. Apps can now offer annual subion plans that are billed monthly, giving users more manageable payment structures in supported regions outside the United States and Singapore.
As expected from a mid-year iOS update, iOS 26.5 also includes important security patches, stability improvements, and bug fixes aimed at improving overall system reliability across supported iPhone models.
