Arrival of Khomeini on 1 February 1979 at Mehrabad International Airport in Tehran, escorted by an Air France pilot

After 15 years of exile, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini set foot in Tehran, returning to a nation on the brink of revolution. His arrival electrified the Iranian masses and marked the beginning of the final chapter of the Iranian Revolution.

Within days of this event, the Pahlavi regime would collapse, and Iran would undergo one of the most dramatic political transformations of the 20th century.

Mohammad Reza Shah Pahlavi, the last monarch of Iran, fled the country on January 16, 1979, as the Islamic Revolution swept the nation. This departure ended his 38-year reign and forced him into permanent exile.
